Caramel at Epcot

The makers of Werther’s® Original® Caramels, will celebrate the grand opening of their first and only freestanding retail location in the world, located in the Germany Pavilion of the World Showcase at Epcot®.

The Karamell-Küche provides visitors with the delectable taste of Werther’s signature caramel fresh off the stove, paired with a wide range of treats like caramel popcorn, caramel-covered apples and caramel-dipped strawberries. German Caramel chefs create and serve these homemade confections right in front of you.
“The best part about the Karamell-Küche is that we get to share the story of Werther’s and how it all started in Germany, and came to the United States,” said Jannis Huntgeburth, Karamell-Küche caramel chef from Göttingen, Germany. “I love to connect with customers through our story, and even more, I enjoy creating delicious treats like my favorite, caramel-dipped strawberries, that are a customer favorite.”

The shop models itself after an old-world, German caramel kitchen, leaving visitors feeling as though they have gone back in time. Inside Karamell-Küche, customers will find a wide range of tasty treats —brownies, cookies, and fudge made fresh daily, as well as specialty and giftable merchandise that can only be found at the Karamell-Küche at Epcot®. Choose from a host of mouthwatering goodies being displayed, or opt to indulge in a Werther’s caramel creation made fresh right in front of you. If you aren’t able to make it to Epcot® in Lake Buena Vista, FL, we invite you to prepare a special caramel treat in your own home. Below is the Werther’s Funny Face Caramel Apple recipe to help you bring the delight of Karamell-Küche to your own family’s kitchen.

Werther’s® Original® Funny Face Caramel Apples

Ingredients:
75 pieces (approx 16.5oz) Werther’s Original Chewy Caramels, unwrapped
2 ounces Werther’s Original Caramel Chocolates Dark Cream, unwrapped
2 ounces Werther’s Original Caramel Chocolates Milk, unwrapped
6 medium-size Granny Smith apples
6 popsicle sticks
2 ounces assorted candies and caramel popcorn
2 tablespoons evaporated milk

Directions:

Wash and dry apples. Insert one popsicle stick in the core of each apple.

Place unwrapped caramels and evaporated milk in stainless steel melting bowl or a 1-quart microwave safe bowl. Microwave on high, stirring every 30-45 seconds until fully melted and smooth, about 2 minutes. If using a stainless steel bowl, heat over very low heat, stirring frequently.

Carefully dip each apple in the melted caramel, using a spoon to cover. The caramel thickens as it cools so it is best to work quickly. If necessary, return the caramel to the microwave for 30 seconds at a time to return it to dipping consistency.

Place apples on wax paper-lined cookie sheet. Meanwhile, place unwrapped Caramel Dark Cream Chocolates into a small microwave-safe bowl and microwave on 80% heat setting, stirring every 30 seconds until melted, about 60 seconds. Repeat with Caramel Milk Chocolate. Be careful not to burn chocolate.

Apply chocolate and candies as pictured to finish off Funny Face Caramel Apples! Serves six. For more information, or to find more caramel recipes, visit www.caramelfest.com.

SeaWorld and National Geographic Turn Shark Encounter Into A Virtual Classroom

Today, SeaWorld Orlando became a virtual classroom as more than 157,000 students from more than 3,500 schools from across the nation, including more than 100 in Florida, interacted with a National Geographic filmmaker and a SeaWorld shark expert. The live webcast and Q-and-A session took place in front of a backdrop of dozens of sharks at the park’s Shark Encounter attraction.

The “virtual assembly” was an opportunity for students to expand their knowledge of wildlife, science and filmmaking with famed National Geographic filmmaker Andy Casagrande. His passion for wildlife has taken him around the world to capture the lives and movements of some of the planet’s most fascinating creatures including sharks.

The SeaWorld assembly is part of National Geographic’s “The Great Migrations Education Initiative” which provides schools with an online educational hub that includes classroom materials and resources such as lesson plans, activities, projects and video clips. The series “Great Migrations” premieres Nov. 7, 2010 on the National Geographic Channel and chronicles epic migrations of animals including sharks.

SeaWorld's "Shark Encounter" plunges guests into the underwater realm of spine-chilling denizens of the deep, including eels, barracuda, venomous fish, and sharks. The highlight of the attraction is a 60-foot shark tunnel that runs through a 600,000 gallon aquarium surrounding visitors with more than 30 sharks, including sand tiger, nurse and brown sharks.

Hotels near University of Central Florida

Many of the travelers who come to Orlando for a vacation might not realize that Orlando is also a college town. Even though the University of Central Florida is among the youngest of Florida’s state universities (it was founded in 1963 to provide technically trained graduates for the nearby Space Coast) UCF is currently Florida’s largest university and the third largest university in the nation by enrollment with almost 54,000 students. With a university this big, there needs to be a variety of places for guests to stay, and fortunately there a number of hotels near the University of Central Florida to choose from.

Hotels within a two mile radius of the University of Central Florida include the LaQuinta Inn and Suites, Crestwood Suites Orlando UCF Hotel, Homewood Suites by Hilton and Days Inn & Suites UCF/Research Park. Many more hotels are located in east Orlando as well as nearby Winter Park, Florida. These hotels are ideally situated for business travelers and are close enough to the local expressways to access downtown Orlando as well the world-famous attractions just south of downtown. Although the main campus of the University of Central Florida is on the east side of town, the newly opened UCF medical school is on the south side of Orlando off of the 417 Greeneway expressway, making it very accessible to the Walt Disney World resort area.

The Grand Reef Coming To Discovery Cove in 2011

Discovery Cove, the ultimate, all-inclusive tropical retreat where guests swim with dolphins, takes immersion to new depths when it opens an all-new addition -- The Grand Reef -- in June 2011.

The new reef features multiple levels of exploration, from shallow waters to deeper swimming adventures, from white sandy beaches and hammocks swaying in the breeze, to snorkeling among canyons inspired by reefs from around the world.

“The Grand Reef takes Discovery Cove’s world-class animal encounters to an all new level -- several, actually,” said Stewart Clark, the park’s vice president. “It’s what our guests expect from us, unforgettable connections with the sea and making memories that will last forever. This could only be created by Discovery Cove.”

Visitors just need to get their feet wet to enjoy The Grand Reef, or they can choose to go deep. They can step into tranquil, shallow waters to discover a below-the-surface world teeming with sea life, or they can snorkel in deeper waters as thousands of exotic fish and graceful rays swim around them.

Surprises abound. Families can seek discoveries along the water’s edge or cross a bridge to see sharks swimming below. They’ll play hide-and-seek with thousands of beautiful fish, from small colorful wrasses to large spotted eagle rays. Further out in the reef, stunning habitats create the feeling of swimming right alongside venomous lionfish and sharp-toothed reef sharks, each safely behind glass. Guests can take paths and bridges to the reef’s islands and hidden grottos as they delve into the reef from above, around and below.

Those looking for an even more exhilarating adventure can take part in The Grand Reef’s innovative experience, SeaVenture, an underwater walking tour. Wearing dive helmets, guests find up-close excitement around every corner, each step yielding a new discovery. They’ll come across lionfish and sharks (safely behind massive panoramic windows), one-on-one touches with unique animals and schools of fish and gentle rays swimming by. SeaVenture is a once-in-a-lifetime, undersea experience available for a nominal fee.

The Grand Reef is the perfect balance between adventure and relaxation, a fully immersive tropical escape, new to discover in Orlando in 2011.

Discovery Cove is a full-day experience where guests can swim with dolphins, hand-feed exotic birds, snorkel through beautiful fresh and salt water lagoons and relax on pristine, white-sand beaches. In addition to the park’s one-of-a-kind animal interactions and lush natural beauty, Discovery Cove delivers superlative, personalized service, and unlimited access to an unparalleled array of first-class amenities.

Discovery Cove amenities include meals, snacks and beverages throughout the day’s adventures, towels, wet suits and swim gear, plus a pass for unlimited admission* to either SeaWorld or Aquatica in Orlando or Busch Gardens in Tampa to be used surrounding a Discovery Cove visit. Guests can upgrade to the Ultimate package which includes admission to all three sister parks for an additional fee. Advanced reservations are required.

Seasonal rates for Discovery Cove’s Dolphin Swim Day Resort Package start at $199 (rates for Day Resort Package without dolphin swim experience and guests ages 3-5 start at $129). Prices vary seasonally.

Whale Born at SeaWorld Orlando

Katina, a 34-year-old killer whale, gave birth Saturday, October 9, at 7:28 p.m. in SeaWorld Orlando’s multimillion-gallon Shamu Stadium.

Katina gave birth to the 7-foot-long, 350-pound calf in Shamu Stadium's main pool following a 45-minute labor. Moments later, the baby whale instinctively swam to the surface for its first breath.

This is the seventh calf born to Katina, an 18-foot-long, 5,400-pound killer whale.

“It’s a terrific day for all of us at SeaWorld,” said Kelly Flaherty-Clark, curator of animal training. “Katina is an experienced mom and she appears to be bonding quickly with her baby.”

SeaWorld veterinarians and trainers remain cautiously optimistic about the progress of the baby and her mother and are encouraged by the bonding they’ve already seen. The gender has not yet been determined.

This calf is the 27th killer whale born at the SeaWorld parks in Orlando, Fla., San Diego, Calif. and San Antonio, Texas. Sixteen whales have been born at SeaWorld Orlando. SeaWorld's killer whale breeding program is the most successful in the world.
