San Juan has the busiest airport and port in the Caribbean, a very popular cruise ship destination as San Juan is considered the gateway to the Caribbean. Old San Juan is a tourist haven with many museums, galleries, restaurants and shops. The streets are narrow and have that pictureque old European look to them.
While San Juan does have some nice beaches, the beaches aren't the main draw for San Juan. Visitors to San Juan are generally looking for a cultural experience of all that San Juan the city has to offer. In other words if you're looking for a Caribbean island vacation with a white sand beach to lounge on all day, San Juan may not be the best choice.

Being a large city there is some crime issues to be aware of as well. The murder rate in San Juan is rather high and some areas like La Perla are known to be areas to avoid.
