Best Caribbean vacation # 8 is the Bahamas

Is it really better in the Bahamas?  Is it one of the best Caribbean vacations?

Well, if you ask me I would say you certainly can't go wrong with a trip to the Bahamas.

Some pro's would be:
1. Close to U.S. (i.e. short flight, cheaper airfare)
2. North of Hurricane alley (southern Caribbean)  especially important if planning a summer or fall trip.
3. English is primarily spoken

Con's:
1.  Close to U.S. ( loses some of  that exotic feel when the marinas a full of boaters from Florida on weekends)
2. The islands are flat as a pancake like Florida, not much scenery.

The Bahamas are where Christopher Columbus first landed when discovering America in 1492.  Although the Bahamas aren't technically in the Caribbean we are including them in our list of best Caribbean vacation destinations.

Unlike some Caribbean islands that are just one island such as Aruba or Barbados, the Bahamas are a archipelago of over 600 islands.  Grand Bahama is the largest, but New Providence, where the capitol Nassau is located is probably most well known.  Cruise lines have bought some of the Bahama islands to create their own destination, including Coco Cay of Royal Caribbean, Little Stirrup Cay of Princess and of course Disney's Castaway Cay.  Cay is pronounced "key" by the way. Incidentally, you can get a Free Castaway Cay Package from Sandals Emerald Bay

The Bahamas began as a British settlement and still retain some of that British flavor.  The Bahamas are a regular target for hurricanes wich cause major damage when they strike as all these islands only are about 6 feet above sea level, any good storm surge washes over the entire islands.  Being further North than most Caribbean islands like Aruba for instance, the Bahamas are a bit cooler in the winter.  So if you don't really want to bask in 80 degree heat in the middle winter, the Bahamas might be a good choice.

When I spent my honeymoon there, my wife and I loved it.  We stayed on Grand Bahama, aside from some casinos and a couple small shopping centers there wasn't a whole lot to do, which is fine if you just want a quiet getaway.  The Garden of the Groves was beautiful and fun to walk through.  In fact, here 20 years later I have a photo of me and my wife in the Garden of the Groves on my desk.  We also still have a conch shell from our time there. If you want activities and nightlife, I'd recommend going to Nassaua, and the best deals there can be found on Book It.

The beaches are as beautiful as any Caribbean island.  For us it truly was the best Caribbean vacation! Don't forget you can Find Last Minute Deals at hotels.com!
