Best Caribbean vacation destination number 7 is Cancun, Mexico. Cancun doesn't qualify as a Caribbean island destination as it is on the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico, but since it does border the Caribbean we are including Cancun in our list. As with most Caribbean vacation destinations, Cancun gets most of their visitors in the milder winter and spring months. As expected the rates for airfare and hotels goes up dramatically during this time. FYI- If you want to save money travel to the Caribbean in the summer.

While Cancun sets on a pristine white sand beach, it has a large number of hotels one after another so it can get very crowded. Cancun has been in years past a huge spring break destination and is a resort area known for its nightlife and partying scene.

Due to recent escalations of extremely violent drug wars, the U.S State Department has issued a warning for those considering traveling to Mexico, here is a link to that release. With that in mind I would personally not even travel there for the time being, there are too many great islands in the Caribbean to take advantage of that are very safe, but hey, that's just me.

Another consideration to be aware of is the panhandling in Cancun at the airport, the beach and around town. Sometimes they can be rather aggressive and theft is a common occurrence, so be aware.

Cancun is famous for its great beaches, some of the best in Mexico. As an Eastern facing beach there tends to be some surf, you won't find the near placid like waters such as around the Western shores of Barbados or the Grenadines. Something to be aware of if you're taking along small children. Also, the beaches are long and wide with no shade, so be sure your hotel has plentiful umbrellas, unless you like the lobster look.

Off the coast lies what is believed to be the second longest coral reef. The climate in Cancun is typical Caribbean tropical only hotter. High temperatures May through September are in the 90"s regularly. Cancun has been hammered by hurricanes in recent years. Hurricanes Gilbert, Wilma and Dean have decimated the city of Cancun, yet they seem to faithfully rebuild.
